Features of the Bridlemile Neighborhood

Southwest Portland is a beautiful area of the city, complete with tons of greenery, nature trails, parks, and a tight-knit community atmosphere. One of the more interesting aspects of Bridlemile specifically is that the southern part of the neighborhood is technically unincorporated territory of Multnomah County.

Fanno Creek runs along the southern border of Bridlemile, giving it even more of a natural vibe. You’d be hard-pressed to realize that you’re only 20 minutes from the city center. Here, it feels like you’re way out in the countryside. Depending on which part of the neighborhood you live in, it’s easy to get wrapped up in the quaint, small-town vibe. Be sure to go hiking around the area’s many trails – exploring Bridlemile is always a treat.

Bridlemile Neighborhood Businesses of Note

Because most of this area is residential, the neighborhood doesn’t have much in the way of restaurants or nightlife. However, the Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway marks the southern border, and it’s packed with businesses all the way down. Here are a few of the highlights you can expect to find here.

Portland Athletic Club

Established in 1975, the Portland Athletic Club is something of a landmark in the neighborhood. This club is mostly known for its five indoor tennis courts, and it hosts a professional-grade league throughout the year. Many residents are members, although individuals and groups can drop-in for a round whenever they like.

In addition to tennis, the Club also features a full-size basketball court, which area residents can rent at their leisure. While this athletic club isn’t as old or as illustrious as some of the others in Portland (the MAC comes to mind), it’s a perfect place to relax, have fun, and catch up with your neighbors. Plus, because everything is indoors, members can enjoy the facilities year-round. Not rain nor sleet nor snow can interfere with your lessons.

45th Street Pub and Grill

There aren’t many places in Bridlemile open late, but the 45th street pub helps make up for that oversight. The bar and grill is the perfect place to watch a game – the NFL is particularly big here. During the warmer months of the year, patrons enjoy eating on the patio, chatting with friends, and knocking back a few cold ones. The Pub usually has game-day specials, which offers even more incentive to drop by and cheer your favorite team.

The food here is also pretty amazing. The highlight of the menu is the 45th Burger, which is a house specialty. We highly recommend adding egg and bacon to it for an even better dining experience. Otherwise, it’s standard pub fare, complete with tater tots, mozzarella sticks, chicken strips, hot dogs, and buffalo wings. Even better is their Sunday brunch, where you can get a chicken-fried steak and a bloody mary. What more could you ask for?

IBU Public House

If you want a more chic pub experience, then IBU is just down the street from 45th. This place is much larger, sitting within a massive barn-style building. IBU was originally founded in 2016 but underwent new ownership changes the following year. Now, the place is considered a sister pub to ABV out in Hillsboro.

In case you weren’t familiar with the acronym, IBU stands for International Bitterness Units, which tells you how bitter a beer tastes. Considering Portland’s affinity for IPAs, you should probably memorize your IBUs. This pub has 36 beers on a rotating tap, making it one of the most versatile beer halls in the city.

The food menu is fairly standard and similar to what you might find at ABV. Burgers, fries (both regular and sweet potato), chicken, salads, and several vegan options for those who need it. Overall, IBU is excellent as a meeting place for friends and neighbors. The picnic-style tables are perfect for creating new friendships and bonding over a pint.

Scales and Tails Exotic Pet Clinic

When most people think of pets, animals like dogs, cats, and the occasional parakeet come to mind. However, many people enjoy the company of different animals, such as lizards, pigs, fish, and ferrets. For those individuals, the Scales and Tails Pet Clinic is here to serve.

The clinic is run by Melinda Surrency, a longtime Portland resident, and animal lover. She’s volunteered at the Oregon Zoo and Audobon Society, which helped her gain valuable experience working with a wide assortment of species. Melinda is passionate about her job, and fights for animals of all shapes and sizes. One of the more interesting species she advocates for is the humble skunk. Apparently, more than a few Portland residents keep skunks as pets – who knew?

Holy Smokes Righteous Eats

For a time, food carts seemingly took over Portland. Every parking lot from Downtown to the East Side was filled with all kinds of food, drinks, and wonderful aromas. The craze has since died down, which means that the food carts remaining are some of the best in the city. Holy Smokes doesn’t look like much on the outside, but once you dig into your sandwich, you’ll understand why it’s a local favorite.

Part of the name stems from the fact that many of the meats served here are kosher. Not only that, but they are sourced locally as much as possible. Holy Smokes specializes in BBQ sandwiches, including pulled pork, brisket, chicken, and even smoked jackfruit. If you haven’t tried this food before, we highly recommend it. Jackfruit has a softer consistency than you might think, and with BBQ sauce, it’s almost like pulled pork. Plus, it’s a much healthier alternative.

Bridlemile Neighborhood Parks

Technically, you could call the whole neighborhood a park, considering how many trees, trails, and natural features it has. The residents all take pride in maintaining these green spaces all year round. You won’t find litter or discarded junk anywhere – and that’s by design. Living here means being part of a community. There are five official parks within Bridlemile, each offering gorgeous scenery and relaxing vibes. Dogs are also welcome in many of the parks, further enhancing Bridlemile’s family-friendly atmosphere.
