Portland Dog Friendly Hotels – Dog Friendly Hotels in Portland Oregon

Portland Dog Friendly Hotels are not as difficult to find as you might think, because Portland Oregon is a very dog friendly town.  We’ve created this helpful guide to Dog Friendly Hotels in Portland to make it easy for you to find the best hotel for you and your doggie to enjoy in Portland.   Pet lovers know that it can be stressful to travel with your pet, unless you find a dog friendly or pet friendly hotel in Portland that truly cares about both the pet owners AND their furry friends.  Dog lovers can tell the difference between hotels that only just barely tolerate dogs, compared to the best dog friendly hotels in Portland that genuinely love and cater to dogs.  If you want to pamper your pooch, you might choose one of the latter category so you both enjoy your vacation in Portland.

Choosing a Dog Friendly Portland Hotel

Some factors to consider when selecting a pet friendly hotel in Portland include doggie-focused amenities both inside and outside of your hotel room.  Inside the room, truly dog-friendly hotels may offer your pooch his own doggie bed, towels for covering the furniture or cleaning off paws, dog bowls and treats, as well as “walking papers”.  Outside of the hotel, you may find watering dishes for your thirsty pooch, and places to hook up the leash outside.   Many hotels offer doggie packages to make your pet feel comfortable.

Outdoor dog friendly dining in Portland can be found at some local breweries like the Lucky Lab, and restaurants like the Tin Shed.  Outdoor amenities that factor into your decision of choosing the right dog friendly motel in Portland can include what amenities are located right near your hotel.  Some neighborhoods in Portland have plenty of sidewalks and comfortable spaces for walking your dog.  Keep in mind you probably don’t want to have to stroll for blocks for Fido to relieve himself when it’s raining outside.   Here is a list of Portland Dog Parks you may find helpful.

Many Portland Dog Friendly Hotels are situated Downtown near the Pearl District, shopping, theater, Arts and Culture.  The Pearl District on the edge of Downtown Portland is known for little “city dogs”, and it has a couple of small parks where you might walk and interact with other Portland dog owners.  If you have a larger dog, or multiple pets, you might prefer Portland dog friendly hotels that are located near Portland dog parks where you can let your dog run and play off-leash for a while.

Helpful Tips -Things to Consider when Booking a Dog Friendly Portland Hotel Room

Make sure you find out whether the hotel is merely pet tolerant, or is actually pet friendly . You will feel more welcome at a place where dogs are not frowned upon.  A quick phone call or visit to the hotel’s website will usually resolve this question for you.

Pet number, breed, or weight restrictions may apply.  Check the pet policy on the number of pets allowed, as well as any weight restrictions.  Some Portland hotels will allow larger dogs, and others will not.  I have three dogs myself, so I always have to ask because many hotels limit you to two pets.

Check the hotel’s pet fees – some hotels barely charge anything to keep dogs, but others can price gouge you for this added service, so be sure to ask!  Sometimes it can be less expensive to board your pet at a pet boarding facility or doggie daycare, than to board him with you in a hotel room.

Make sure the room you are reserving is pet friendly.  Just because the site says room reservations are available, doesn’t always mean pet friendly rooms are open.  Because some people are allergic to pets, hotels often keep a limited number of rooms specifically as pet-friendly, but the rest of the rooms are not.  So be sure to specifically request a dog friendly hotel room.

Check the local amenities outside and near the hotel: is there a place to walk the dog nearby, or a park?  Be sure to take doggie walking papers so you can clean up after your pooch.

Is the hotel located close to where you will spend much of your time when visiting Portland?

Also, before selecting your pet friendly Portland hotel, it is a good idea to search for and read dog friendly Portland Hotel reviews on sites like Google, Yelp, or TripAdvisor.com, so you will have an idea what other visitors have experienced.

Do you need a Portland doggie daycare for part of your stay?  It is best to plan this in advance for a stress-free visit.  Most hotels will not allow you to leave pets unattended in the hotel room.  This is because pets can get stressed out in a strange place, and even the most normally well-behaved pooch could make a mess if left alone in a strange room!

Which brings me to my last point: once you find a dog friendly Portland hotel that you love; stick with it!  Dogs love routine, and if you stay at the same place each time you visit, your pet will be less stressed out because they will remember the place from the last time.

Our list below includes some popular Portland dog friendly hotels, but remember that it is always a good idea to call or email your hotel before travelling to get any current pet guidelines and restrictions.  Be aware that dog friendly Portland hotels may charge you a per-night pet fee, so always inquire as to what the additional pet fees are before booking, because they can widely vary!

Portland Dog Friendly Hotels – Boutique Hotels

Ace Hotel 1022 Southwest Stark Street, Portland, OR (503) 228-2277  www.acehotel.com

The Ace hotel probably does a really good job of personifying Portland, which is to say, we take pride in being genuine and a bit less generic than mainstream America.  Where most hotel reservation systems simply have a box for “number of people”, they also have a box for “number of dogs”, which is always a good sign in my book.

Below, from their website:

Ace Hotel Portland is a small hotel in historical downtown Portland, Oregon, near PSU and the Pearl District. We are blocks from Powell’s Books and within walking distance of the many cultural districts. You can also take public transportation to see other popular attractions like the Trailblazers, the Rose Garden, or the Rose Festival.

Ace has a penchant for organic, authentic, unique design. Although we have been called a boutique hotel and a hip hotel, we’re not sure what that really means. We’re a little modern, and a little bohemian. Our rooms are pet-friendly (which basically means dog-friendly), so we encourage you to bring the whole family.

Hotel Lucia 400 SW Broadway, Portland, OR (503) 225-1717  www.hotellucia.com

I couldn’t find a word about their pet policy on their website, but Hotel Lucia is supposedly a dog friendly hotel.  Hotel Lucia in Portland is a stylish boutique hotel, conveniently located in Downtown with easy access to shopping, theater, dining, and more Downtown Portland Events.

More Dog Friendly Hotels Portland Oregon – Portland Dog Friendly Hotels

Jupiter Hotel 800 East Burnside Street, Portland, OR (503) 230-9200 www.jupiterhotel.com

The Jupiter Hotel is located on the East side of the Willamette river, therefore, for those of you who want a less generic experience than Downtown Portland has to offer, this is a great choice.  East Portland has a bit more local Portland flavor and personality than Downtown, and this hotel is attached to the Doug Fir Lounge where you can take in some great live music.  The Jupiter Hotel is not huge, but it does offer a few dog friendly Portland hotel suites that are a great choice for Portland East Side visits.

Below, from their website:

“Our LexiDog pet-designated rooms are tricked-out, spacious Metros with everything your pampered pup needs for a perfect hotel stay: an eco-friendly dog bed, food & water bowls to use during, a stylish leash, a special brush and dry shampoo to use during your stay. Plus, enjoy the complimentary toys, snacks, potty bags and discount LexiDog doggie daycare coupons and other treats! And sleep soundly with the knowledge that part of every pet-friendly reservation provides a donation to the Oregon Humane Society. Woof!”

Portland Dog Friendly Hotels – Riverfront

RiverPlace Hotel 1510 Southwest Harbor Way, Portland, OR (503) 228-3233 www.riverplacehotel.com

The RiverPlace hotel is a perfectly lovely choice for those who want to be close to Downtown Portland, but also along the waterfront of the Willamette river, which offers some stunning scenery.  Plus, not being surrounded by skyscrapers and concrete, this might be a more comfortable Portland Dog Friendly hotel than some other choices. This is a beautiful boutique hotel, situated right on the banks of the river.  You can walk your pet along the Portland waterfront ,which features lovely park-like settings.  For great exercise, walk your dog along the Portland Eastbank Esplanade.  There are a few restaurants and shops lining the waterfront, but keep in mind that for serious Downtown shopping or theater events, you will need to walk or take the Portland Streetcar to get into Central Downtown Portland, or the Pearl District several blocks away.  If you don’t mind a little stroll, you can also walk the lower Steel Bridge (on the Eastbank Esplanade) to get to the East side of Portland.

There is no obvious mention of their pet policy on their website, other than that they are “pet friendly”, so give them a call to find out what pet restrictions and fees are involved.  This is a very popular Portland hotel due to their location, so be sure to call ahead and make sure pet friendly rooms are available for your stay.
